Under what the FSS called "simply gorgeous weather" straight for 4 days, the 4th Annual Kathy Jaffe Challenge concluded today in White Lake, NY. 32 competitors in 4 power categories enjoyed sunny skies and almost no wind in beautiful Catskill Mountains in a contest sponsored by IAC Chapter 52. We all have enjoyed having you in our neighborhood and hope that you come back again next year.

Congratulations to all competitors and many thanks to a countless number of volunteers who helped with the contest:
    Ron Chadwick
: Simply the best CD anyone can ask for. He was the starter, he drove the boundaries in and out, he set up the banquet, he worked with the local authorities to calm down the local noise-makers, etc.
    Greg Dungan
: Simply the best Chief Judge anyone can have at their contest if you want it to run like a well oiled machine and keep it fun. US Navy - enough said.
    Ann Salcedo
: Volunteer Coordinator who flew all the way from Florida to work at this contest. She is truly deserving of her Kathy Jaffe Award. I don't have enough room here to list all the things she did.
    Deanna Willson
: Ran the Registrar like an election campaign.  I've never seen anyone deal with that much paperwork and keep it all in order.

Tom Parsons who stepped in and diligently ran scoring all weekend long despite the last minute changes and re-scorings. Stephen Seidel who provided the music system that filled the air with Top Gun soundtrack all weekend long... There is nothing better than walking to your plane to the sound of "Mighty Wings". Steve also created the Kathy Jaffe plaques. Split Image Aerobatic Team for supplying the perfect picture. Danny Adams of Aviat - There are not enough words in English to describe all the support and comfort that Danny and Aviat Aircraft provide with their contest technical assistance program. Thank you all for supporting our sport and for the equipment that keeps it safe. Even though it cuts into his hunting season I hope Danny can always come back and Stu Horn keeps sending him!! Birdie Saurenman who operated like Oshkosh fly-in or Newark Int'l ATC on weekends constantly and swiftly launching aircraft into the pattern. Thanks also to a ton of other volunteers who freely gave their time to make sure we all have a fun and safe contest. We thank you all.

And now on to the awards!
Aviat Pitts Trophy – Alex Belov
Grass Roots Award – Daniel Day
First Time Sportsman – Kendal Simpson
Best Scoring Chapter Award – Chapter 35
See you again next year. Nationals...here comes New York!!

    By - Alex Belov
    Fearless Leader IAC Chapter 52

Alex covered just about everything. The whole Northeast was “severe clear” and still is. We flew 32 pilots, three flights each and finished up at 1205 on Sunday. Everyone who participated did an outstanding job, right down to the guys cooking the “burgers.” (We might have to rethink those roast beef and ketchup sandwiches) To all those pilots who competed, my hats of to all of you. A great job, very professional! There has been a lot of fuel being burned in the NE and the results are very obvious.

    SPORTSMAN
Bill Gordon did a beautiful job-winning Sportsman. The transition from F-4 to Pitts Special doesn’t seem to have been much of a problem. Who said you can’t teach an OLD fighter pilot NEW tricks. Brian Beaudry competed in a beautiful 300 + HP Eagle and placed 2nd in Free. He mentioned the plane is for sale.

    INTERMEDIATE
Our own Alex Belov took everything “on the table” in Intermediate and then some. The only thing he didn’t take home was that good looking blonde at the Bar on Thursday night. It was good to see Ron Saglimbene back competing again. You’ve been away too long my friend, and you have been missed.

    ADVANCED
We had quite a “battle” - our perennial winners, Mike Herbert, Mark Dunkerely and Bill Finagin were all in the running but in the end it was Robert Holland that placed first. Rob did an outstanding job and I am sure you will be hearing more from him. He brought two of his students with him. Janusz Becla who placed third in Sportsman and Daniel Day who won Primary. This three man “wrecking crew” from Chapter 35, blew Chapter 52 out of the water for the chapter trophy on the last flight of the contest. Nice job guys. I hope you can get the Trophy back from Hans.

For the one or two people in the sport of aerobatics who are not familiar with Bill Finagin I have to say a few words. Here is a man who has been flying before most of us knew what an airplane looked like. He comes to the contest in his “tans”, polo shirt and loafers (shinned, I might add). He will finish judging, walk out to “Panzer One” and be airborne in five minutes, fly the sequence, and when he exits the plane he looks like he just got out of church. It really pisses you off! I don’t know of a better aerobatic instructor, and I’m sure he is the best spin instructor on the planet, FACT. It is always a pleasure to see Bill at any contest and what really makes it great is you know he still loves it!

Kendal Simpson was the “hit” of the weekend, with his Meyer, “Little Toot” (I hope I got that right) It’s one of those “double-wingers” with a 160 HP. It was his first contest and he competed in Primary for a patch and in Sportsman. He did a great job and I hope you get to meet him and his plane in the future. He’s exactly what this Sport needs. Robert Butts came all the way from just south of Ann Arbor, Michigan, in an S-1C to compete in Sportsman. Four hops! Thanks for the effort Robert, we really appreciated it.

Harley Carnes flew in and judged every category, as did Stephen Seidel, Jim Wells and many others. Alex mentioned many others that made this contest possible but I am sure we missed a few. This is a “group effort” as you all know. The IAC is a very small group and it will take the involvement of every member, pilot and non-pilot alike, if it is to continue. I thank you all again for participating in the Kathy Jaffe Challenge and will do my best to make next years event even better. Until then, I’ll see you at the next contest. From the “Fearless Leader and myself, “THAT IS ALL”

    “Sierra hotel”
